As chief I will require all maintenance of any aircraft which flies over US airspace be performed by US citizens and in the US. Foreign airlines - take it or leave it.
That should either destroy the aviation industry or create 40,000 mechanic jobs, I have not done a proper evaluation yet.

A. I added Fritz to the list.
B. You missed Oliver Campeau, Latin.
C. Jim G; Ed Spencer runs for President, wins and appoints you FAA chief. Problem solved.
D. Drew 325 in the draft, don't remember what happened after that.
E. After 30 years in Detroit , I only listen to SoulTown on Sirrius.
F. I was at the ELP concert and Craw was dancing too!
G. I never forgave Walser for faking sick and forcing me to be Bob Crachit on one nights notice in the Christmas Carol play. Get off my bus Bobby!
H. Settle on a favored date, and Fritz and I will try to make it.

for all you polo players:
trial which is being televised live from Florida.
Billionaire John Goodman drove his Bentley drunk through a stop sign and killed a 21 year old college student.
http://www.wptv.com/generic/news/Goodman-Page-the-trial
The student did not die from impact but drowned because he was trapped in his car underwater. Goodman did not call 911 until at least an hour after the crash. He has recently adopted his 42 year old girlfriend as his daughter as a maneuver to protect his wealth.
His high priced atty Roy Black in his opening stated that Goodman's Bentley malfunctioned and that he was not drunk at the time of the crash. Black said that Goodman was so dazed and in pain from the crash that he went to a nearby "man cave" of a friend and consumed copious amounts of alcohol - which explained why his blood level 3 hours after the crash was at .16.
Experts have determined that his Bentley was going 63 MPH at the time of impact. Pretty quick acceleration from a stop sign at an intersection to the middle of the street (where he completely broadsided the student in the road with no stop sign)
He is facing 30 years and I think he should do a good portion of it. I cannot quite understand how a defense attorney can paint such a fantasy when I would be willing to bet my left arm - he "knows" different. An attorney cannot knowingly lie to the court.
Unlike the rest of my successful classmates - I still gotta go to class.

I went through the whole procedure (bend over and cough etc) as you're standing in line in your underwear with a bunch of other 18 yr old guys. They brought us one at a time into a room and met with some officer who would look at the paper's we brought from our doctor ( I was loaded for bear). The first thing he asked me was "What does this keep you from doing now?" and I had to ask honestly "Nothing". I thought I was screwed. The next thing he said was "Your disqualified" I didn't ask questions and got the hell out of there and never looked back. And boy, did I celebrate that night!! So that's it in a nutshell. Once again, thanks for the youtube video. There's also some great clips of the original Buffalo Springfield (with Neil Young os course) performing "For What It's Worth" last year at their Reunion concert at Bridge school. Check it out.

I wrote a short song tonight. I was lottery number 281 - Dec. 30th. My older brother was a Conscientious Objector. I have been around so many military persons, that I now feel I owe a debt and hope I still have time to pay. I certainly don't like violence or war and sincerely hope the US will get out of Afghanistan soon. I want to end a foreign policy of smoke and mirrors and feel that our country has gravitated too far in the direction of the "Ends Justify the Means".
Secret Torture Black Sites and Guantanamo are not the America of my youthful 7th grade Pledge of Allegiance. Chub would have been madder than a Hornet about 911 but I don't think he would stoop to tactics inspired by the Spanish Inquisition or Auschwitz.

Jim G. -
It sounds like you should not vote for the weekend of July 23 - 29, as you
need to be in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for www.AirVenture.org.
Like my younger and better-looking brother Chas White, I have no life and am
free both weekends.

Drone info from http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/02/president-obama-last-week-signed.ars
President Obama last week signed the FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act of 2012. Tucked inside the legislation is a provision that could have far-reaching implications in the coming decade: widespread civilian use of unmanned aerial drones.
Until now, the use of unmanned drones has been tightly regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Use has mostly been restricted to government agencies, and applications for private use were considered on a case-by-case basis. As of last summer, the FAA had only approved about 100 applications<http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2011/08/05/when-businesses-can-use-drones/> from private parties to fly unmanned drones.
But that's about to change. According to the New York Times,<http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/18/technology/drones-with-an-eye-on-the-public-cleared-to-fly.html> the new legislation mandates that the FAA begin allowing the use of small drones (under 4.4 pounds) by law enforcement within 90 days. And the agency must overhaul its drone regulations by September 30, 2015, including allowing more widespread use of drones by private parties.
The number of potential uses for aerial drones is almost endless, ranging from the life-saving to the creepy. Drones will allow search-and-rescue personnel to more quickly locate disaster victims. The Times interviewed a photographer, Daniel Gárate, who used a drone to make fly-by videos of high-end real estate to help their owners sell them. He shut down his operation after the Los Angeles police warned him that he was violating federal regulations, but he will likely be able to resume his business in 2015.
Other uses of the drones are likely to prove controversial. Gárate says he was asked to use his drone to conduct paparazzi surveillance of Kim Kardashian's wedding. He said no, but others are likely to say yes if drone regulations are liberalized. Google and Microsoft have already added<http://mashable.com/2010/07/10/google-maps-45-degree-aerial/> high-resolution aerial photographs to their online maps, but their coverage is currently limited. Unmanned aerial photography will allow them to achieve much higher coverage at lower cost.
The American Civil Liberties Union has argued that law enforcement use of drones threatens Americans' privacy. A December report<https://www.aclu.org/files/assets/protectingprivacyfromaerialsurveillance.pdf> called for new regulations to ensure that drones are not abused.

Jim,
Very brave of you to talk about this to all of us. I, for one, am proud to
know someone who has the courage and eloquence to take on an issue like
this.
I wish you very well and hope the FAA gets their act together, at least in
your case.
Finally, I agree with your assessment of Jim Finch's own tribulations and
his courage and fortitude. When I think of my whiney ass self and some of
the things I complain about, when I should feel blessed/lucky, I have two
former classmates now I can look to for inspiration.

Gould, James R.
Jim Finch,
I was very impressed to see an article on the web about your airplane
piloting.
I learned to fly an ultralight and have about 250 hours on them (sold my
last one in 1997 so it has been a while). I would like to get a private
pilot's license, but the FAA has been giving me difficulty regarding my
medical. It was especially unfortunate for me because after several years
of not really knowing what I wanted to do in life, in 1986 I realized that I
had the desire and ability to learn to fly an airplane. Unfortunately I made
some very poor decisions in the years 1980-1986, which culminated in diving
headfirst off the Franklin Avenue Bridge on 6/6/85.
I earned my A&P mechanic's license in 1997 and worked as a mechanic for
NWA 1997-2002. I have a goal of building a kit plane with my son Joe. The
Zenair CH750 is what I have had my eye on. It would be nice to be able to
fly it when we finish, but I have a very uphill battle with the FAA in order
to receive a special issuance medical. Many of my fellow classmates have
probably heard rumors of my mental breakdown. Law School has forced me to
face my difficult years several times because of disclosure requirements for
the school application and the bar exam and I am finally reaching a stage
where I don't need to run from it and am able to talk about it.
It seems unfair that diagnoses of psychosis, bipolarism and suicide
attempt from 26 years ago could prevent me from piloting a small aircraft;
whereas a commercial pilot, with the lives of hundreds in his hands, can fly
intoxicated and after only 2 years of sobriety can get his license back. I
have not had any drugs or alcohol for 24.5 years now. I have not had
treatment or medication for mental illness since 1993 - and really only had
sporadic medication and treatment in the years 1986-1993.
There is one option for me, that of special issuance. I will need to
undergo very expensive testing and evaluations and still it will be totally
at the discretion of the FAA whether or not they will grant a special
issuance. This seems especially ironic after Randy Babbit, the head FAA
Administrator resigned last fall after he was arrested while driving drunk.
After I get through with school, May 12th, and pass the bar exam in July - I
plan on devoting some time to attacking this problem.
The FAA might have difficulty in getting past my voluminous pyschiatric
record from 1980-1986 and instead of looking at my many years of sobriety
and stability - only see me as some sort of freak; a ticking time bomb. I
have read several articles which suggest that mental illness is one area
that Americans still feel quite comfortable in discriminating against, even
though we have made great strides in combatting discrimination in the areas
of race, gender, and sexual orientation.
Of course, safety is important - and of course the general public does
not want to take chances just so one individual can enjoy a hobby. Modern
pilots have more stringent medical requirements than the President of the
United States. Isn't he responsible for quite a few lives too? There a a
gazillion ways a person could cause mayhem in this world without the use of
an aircraft - but the FAA can single out persons like myself and play on the
general public's fear of mental illness - and simply deny me the ability to
pilot. I have known I could be a safe pilot now for 24 years. The special
issuance program allows the FAA to more closely monitor pilots with medical
issues. I think I have really waited long enough.
As a read this letter over with my petty complaints, I am reminded of your
incredible trials and I want to tell you, Jim, what an inspiration you are
to me.
Thanks for listening and wish me luck,
Jim Gould
P.S. - look out - the Drones are coming!

I am resending my vote for September because I sent in the
earlier (spam?) email. So I will second Mark Olive's impressive use of
exclamation points. I actually have a commitment on the June weekend. I
promised my wife Barb that we would attend the 137th Minnesota State Fire
Department Association Conference Alexandria, MN. June 14-16. And if that falls
through I am actually supposed to be studying for the Bar Exam June and July.
But I want to take issue with Todd Mac's assertion that June weather is better
than September. I think I might have a few drops of Indian Blood because I like
Indian Summer and I am pretty sure that weekend in September is going to be
warm, dry and sunny - whereas June 14-17 is scheduled for light snow.
Of course if Mac voted for June, just so he didn't have to put up with me... I can understand that.
Mark, did you get my earlier email about my Mentor at school, Ray Peterson?
Sincerely,
Jim Gould
p.s. - yes reading is about as physical as I get these days Jim F.

Thanks David for taking the lead on this...now look what
you’ve started. Since MacGregor has uncharacteristically added his two cents
worth for the month of June due to weather concerns (he believes his hair is
“fuller” in the humidity of a Minnesota summer); I would have to balance that
with a vote for September as a MacContra and because June is a goner for me.
I also like Finch’s idea of a long-ball competition, but
suggest instead of the top of Aspen Mountain we hold that competition in The
Torch office circa ‘71-‘72.

Thanks Tat. I am resending my email sent to the smaller list
plus others who mistakenly did the same (C. White, Bezot and Crawford) to get

(OK, hoping this list is accurate and fairly complete - feel
free to reply all with your choice -- and for those who got my initial
response, I was mostly kidding about Vegas -- probably not an option until our
50th?? Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this Schall and Bryant! Tat)
Dear Blake Class of ’72,
As you who can still subtract know, this year is our 40th year since we graduated. I would like to arrange a get-together for any of us who can make it (with spouses/significant others, probably not kids). We have two weekends that are possibilities – the weekend of June 16 - 18 or the weekend of September 28 – 30. The June weekend (Saturday – Monday has the Greater Blake Open golf tourney/fund raiser on Monday, the 18th and September 28 – 30 is homecoming weekend and I think Bryant got us some ice time that weekend for a free skate/pick up sponge puck game. Both the GBO and the ice time are available regardless of whether we choose that weekend for our party (duh!).
If you could all vote (please hit “reply all”) on one or the other, that would help us pick one. The other part of the decision is do we have a party at one of our houses or, I can arrange to have the Blake Hopkins campus open to us – we could have dinner there (macaroni and cheese, fruit salad and apple crisp?) and wander the halls or be outside, weather permitting. I know we had a chuck wagon one year out there.
Finally, if I’ve missed anyone whose email address one of you knows, please send this to him and copy me so I can add him to the list.
Let everyone know what you are thinking (if you are thinking),
